Abstract

This dataset presents the bedrock geology of the Chaudière River Watershed. The study area designates the Chaudière River watershed, located south of the St. Lawrence River, near Québec City. The watershed is underlain by the Appalachian geological province. The Cambrian to lower Devonian age sedimentary and volcanic rocks are deformed and weakly metamorphosed. The relatively complex geology has been simplified into five major tectonostratigraphic units and intrusive rocks: External Humber Zone North, Internal Humber Zone, External Humber Zone South, Dunnage zone, Gaspé Belt and Intrusive rocks.

Lineage is the description of the sources and steps used to create the current dataset.

Introduction
General process description
Process step Sources
The dataset comes from the synth_geologie_rocDD_nad83_clip1.shp file of the Chaudière River Watershed project archives folder. The geological units name dataset was created by merging the MON_GRP and MON_FRM fields. The English descriptions are from the lexicon of Canadian Geologic Units and the french from the Lexique stratigraphique canadien d'Yvon Globensky (1993) or from the file itself. Bedrock geological units were assigned a lithologic class based on the dominant composition, with the understanding that some units are too complex to be assigned a single lithologic class, in order to render the map in a uniform national map. The original classification of the unit is still available in the dataset, along with a link to the Lexicon of Canadian Geologic Units (http://weblex.nrcan.gc.ca/). The GeoSciML / IUGS lithological classification has been used as a standard earth material vocabulary (http://resource.geosciml.org/).
